If you have an injury in the soft tissues that result in bleeding, try to remove the cause of the injury and rinse the mouth with a dilute saltwater solution. If the wound is visible, try to clean it with mild soap and water. Press damp gauze to the wound for 10-15 minutes. If it does not stop bleeding, seek immediate medical attention and try to see a dentist within six hours for diagnosis and treatment.
For orthodontic emergencies, there are only a few types:
- Facial trauma or injury to the teeth, face and mouth
- Severe, unmanageable pain in these areas
- Infection or swelling in these areas
Any other problems are considered minor and can be taken care of with the right tools. For broken wires, bands or brackets, leave it as is or cover it with orthodontic wax if it irritates the inside of your mouth. Do not connect any elastics to it. If the archwire begins poking near the back of the mouth and irritating the cheeks, call for guidance and instructions before trying to position it with a Q-tip® or a pencil eraser. If your teeth are beginning to loosen or become tender, that just means that they are moving into place, and you can take regular pain relievers or a twice-a-day saltwater rinse, or you can apply a warm washcloth or heating pad to the area.
