As much as 35% of the U.S. population suffers from tooth sensitivity and can be affected by temperature, pressure or even sweetness. When the dentin or “body” of the tooth transmits sensations to the tooth’s nerves, it relays to the brain as pain.
Sometimes the dentin can become exposed through different methods, resulting in increased sensitivity. It can be exposed when your gums shrink from your teeth through gum disease, vigorous brushing or even genetics. It can even be caused by erosion of enamel from acidic and sugar-heavy foods. Brushing your teeth after eating or drinking such foods can be detrimental to your teeth, since the acids soften the outer layer of enamel and can be worn away through brushing. We recommend waiting an hour before brushing so that your saliva has a chance to neutralize the acids. And when you do brush, be sure to use a gentle technique with fluoride toothpaste or sensitive-special toothpaste.
Tooth sensitivity can also be caused by tooth decay, which we recommend coming to see us about for treatment. We will be happy to help you get your oral health on track, and we invite you to call us to schedule your next appointment.
